The 12 Days of Christmas

Christmas is getting closer! Don’t jump ahead of yourself though and remember to celebrate Thanksgiving surrounded by friends, family and a few good books to prepare you for the holiday season! If you are looking for the perfect holiday read, or a short holiday novella to breeze through as you wait for the turkey to cook I have the perfect books for you!

For those of you planning to be cooking and entertaining guests here are two quick reads from Colleen Coble you can enjoy and finish quickly in the free moments that you find!

Holy Night By: Colleen Coble

Leia has everything planned. The caterers are booked, the food ordered, the dresses bought. She is finally ready to be married, but in one moment her innocent little sister Eva has disappeared, and in a moment all of her wedding plans have changed. With a single phone call Leia is scared for her sister Eva and unsure of where to turn, with her wedding cancelled her relationships are tested as she searches to find Leia.

Colleen Coble has pulled together a short and sweet story that at the same time is filled with mystery and suspense that keeps you guessing at each turn. With a Hawaiian wedding Coble has added a new scene to the stereo-typical Christmas stories, you will love trying to discover what has happened to Eva, the only negative being that as a novella the story comes to an end much too soon!

In Silent Night Colleen Coble brings us back to our friends in Rock Harbor. Bree Matthews is preparing for Christmas, ready and waiting for family to arrive, her sister-in-law Lauri shows up early, even though classes don’t end for another two weeks and on top of that Bree and her faithful search-and-rescue dog, Samson are back on the trail after a parachuter has gone missing, while searching Bree finds Lauri out in the woods, and things with her are not adding up. Bree and Kade know that Lauri is hiding something, and that she may no more than what appears about the missing parachuter and his neighbor who went missing a few weeks earlier.

Another beautiful Rock Harbor story from Colleen Coble, we see the inner struggles of these characters, we see as Lauri begins to understand what it means to not be selfish and to be others-focused. Coble has a beautiful skill with words and an ability to drag you into a story where you can curl up and feel like you belong in the town of Rock Harbor.

Set in Ohio just after WWII A Christmas Gift for Rose follows the story of Rose, a young Amish woman, who believed she knew what her future held, a typical Amish life, married to Jonathan and staying at home creating the family she dreams of. With Jonathan returning from the war, she doesn’t know if she could go back to him, with the disapproval of the Amish community. Rose’s family has a secret about her life, and in the midst of everything with Jonathan they give her some information that sends her world into a spiral of questions and has her wondering where her life will lead.

A Christmas Gift for Rose is a beautiful story about love and finding yourself and finding where your home truly is. Tricia Goyer has shared with us an amazing story of love, faith and family just in time for the Christmas season. This book will pull at your heartstrings. A short and quick read, this is the book you will want to share with all your friends and family.

Anna loves her grandparents who raised her, her grandfather, the bishop, however, is very strict and does not want to see change come into their Amish community. Anna doesn’t understand why no one seems to be interested in her, but those who have considered courting her are afraid to because of her grandfather. There’s a new boy in town and he finds that Anna may be the person he wants to court.

Anna is starting to see that her grandfather’s strict rules are dividing the community. Everyone is hiding secrets and Anna finds her faith slipping as she tries to follow her dream to start a family. Can Anna figure out how to balance the two important people in her life? The grandparents who raised her and her love for Jacob?

This was my first Beth Wiseman book, and I am not always a fan of Amish fiction but Beth Wiseman knows how to weave a story and create characters on all levels. Through this book you can see the struggle and process as Anna tries to figure out what to do and how to do what is best for her family. This is a beautiful story of faith and following your dreams for the future.

I received all of these books complimentary through the Litfuse Publicity Program for the 12 Days of Christmas in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

We have all experienced it, that moment where we wonder how we got to the point we are at. We wonder about the what ifs, what if I had stayed? what if I had gone? What if I took that interview? What if I chose him over my career? There are a lot of what ifs in our lives, some that we move further with no regrets and some that we will always wonder about. That is exactly what Ginny Marshall is wondering now, on the verge of signing a huge music contract, a dream that she has had her entire life, the chance to date the big time music producer and have her future set.

However, there is something holding her back, her ex-fiancee whom she turned away from when the chance to pursue her career was offered. Now Ginny is in need of answers from the one person that knows her best, from the person she left behind, Ginny travels to the small town of Gustavus in Glacier Bay, Alaska to find Brett, in a town where everyone know everyone she finds that most know of her history with the much beloved Brett.

Unsure of where to turn Ginny finds herself at Brett’s Grandmothers house, who welcomes her with open arms and offers her a stack of letters to help her find her way.

Mornings with Jesus has brought together the collaborative efforts of many of your favorite authors. This book will give you a fresh perspective and help in building a deeper relationship with our Lord and Savior. This book will encourage you to seek His Word each morning to experiences various attributes of God’s character, from Healer to Comforter to the Son of God. These authors have shared their experiences and teachings of Jesus through 366 daily devotionals.

Each day you will begin your morning with a verse from Jesus’ teachings as well as a devotional around the Word followed by a daily challenge to take a step of faith. This book will not only encourage you but help you to dig deeper and to challenge your daily walk with God.

The devotional from January 24th, from Tricia Goyer revolves around Colossians 3:23-24

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

Goyer reminds about how we are all motivated by rewards, as kids star charts and contests, certificates and trinkets for good grades and good behavior. With Jesus we receive an eternal reward, an eternal inheritance, we don’t receive a certificate for serving Christ. Our days are filled with rewards for the things we do, raises and promotions for a job well done, even in social media we are rewarded with comments, likes and retweets for saying things others enjoy, when we don’t get a response we wonder, is anyone reading this? Why hasn’t anyone responded?

It’s hard to keep our focus, to remember that these earthly rewards are not what matters, Jesus will not be stamping your degree, your certificates with stickers or good job stamps, our reward is Jesus. Our work should always be done for Him, not for earthly rewards. Today lets remember that everything we do should be a reflection of Christ, and every step we take should be to honor and glorify God. To let His light shine through us.

Family Traditions: A Glimpse into Christmas Future
by Tricia Goyer

Have you ever thought about family traditions? As I helped my 1-year-old place ornaments on the Christmas tree this year I imagined her doing the same thing with her children—and maybe even grandchildren—one day. Traditions are beliefs and customs handed down through generations. By sharing meaningful moments with your kids you’re sending yourself into the future. How amazing is that?

Sharing family traditions cause us to slow down from the busy, adult world for a while. We ignore the laundry to set out the nativity set with our kids. We set aside time in our schedules to drive around and look at Christmas lights.

Holiday traditions aren’t only fun, they also help strength family bonds. Through traditions kids trust in the security of family unit. They think, “This is our family and this is what I do.” Of course, the most important thing to share isn’t just what we do … but why. Why do we put out a nativity? To remind us the real meaning of the season—Jesus coming to earth. What do the Christmas lights represent displayed on homes and on trees? They represent the Light of the World, Jesus.

Using traditions to bond our families and share our faith isn’t new. I love these two Scriptures that talk about that very thing.

Exodus 12:25 says, “When you enter the land that the LORD will give you as he promised, observe this ceremony.”

Psalm 78:4 says, “We will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done.”

What are you’re traditions? Here are a few of ours:
Baking a Birthday cake for Jesus
Buying a new ornament every year for each child
Acting out the Christmas story (with props!)
Praying together before opening presents

What are your traditions? Write a list and appreciate them in a new way this year. Then ask, “If I could add one new tradition this holiday season, what would it be?” I’d love to hear what you choose! It also makes me smile to think of your children’s grandchildren doing the same.

I want to love God with a ‘passionate canoe-eating’ kind of love!

What is love? What do we really understand about love? If you read my previous post you probably know where this is all coming from. Did you take the time to read 1 John 4? Stop what you are doing and read it. Yes, now. Take the time soak it into your brain.

Does that not just rock your world?? Just the smallest glimmer of what love is.  Our culture has allowed us to romanticize love, to overuse love and to forget about what it really means, or just maybe we never actually thought about what love is.

Did you ever realize we use the same word to express our feelings about ice cream to express our love for God, the Most Holy God, King of Kings and Lord of Lords, and we use the same word when talking about ice cream!? Is it just me or is that completely insane!? Are you seeing the problem here?

Some of us even throw around this word love and let it mean more when talking about ice cream or a puppy than our Creator! Are we so crazy to believe that one little word can consume the whole entire definition of what love is!? A word that we cannot even fully understand what it means.

God is love.

Can we understand this? Can we understand that love is not just a feeling; it’s not an emotion it is part of WHO God is?

There is a chapter in the book ‘Praying for your Future Husband’ that really just stuck out to me while thinking about love. The Hawaiian language has over 70 words for wind! Wind! And we have only 1 for love!  One of these 70 words is used to describe a wind that is a ‘canoe-eating’ wind. Now can you imagine if we had 70 different words to describe love, and each of them still described part of who God is!

Our view of love has become so narrow. So scewed by the media and influences around us, we throw around the word love like it is nothing. We talk about some day ‘falling in love.’  The problem with falling is that falling is something I do on accident (a lot) I never mean to fall, and if you can fall into love doesn’t that mean you can also fall out of love?

I don’t want my love for my Savior, my love for the God of the Universe, for my Creator to be an accident. I want to have an intentional love.  A love that crys out to God every second, that yearns for His presence! I want to love God with a ‘passionate canoe-eating’ kind of love! I want to chase after God with all that I am, with every fiber of my being!

I want to understand what it means to love the way Jesus loves.
